Do you need to tax a used car before driving it home?

Published 10 October 2026 · reviewed 10 October 2026

In one paragraph

Yes. Vehicle tax does not transfer with a car when it changes hands, so as the new keeper you must tax it before you drive it on a public road. You can do that straight away online using the reference on the V5C, and the car must be insured too.

This catches people out more than almost anything else on buying day. The tax that was on the car yesterday belonged to the person selling it, not to the car. Here is how it actually works, and how to have it all done before you turn the key.

Does the tax come with the car when I buy it?

No. Vehicle tax does not transfer with a car: the new keeper must tax it before it is driven on a public road, which can be done straight away online with the V5C reference. The seller's remaining tax is refunded to them, and the car has none from the moment it changes hands. That is true whether you buy from a dealer, a private seller or an auction.

When exactly do I need to tax it?

Before the car moves on a public road — including the drive home. There is no grace period and no first-journey exception. The practical answer is to tax it while you are still standing next to the car, not when you get home.

How do I tax a car I have just bought?

Online, using the reference number from the new keeper slip or the V5C, and it takes a few minutes on a phone. The DVLA system will let you tax the car as soon as you are recorded as the new keeper, so the order on the day is simple:

  • Agree the sale and get the paperwork.
  • Make sure the car is insured in your name.
  • Tax it online with the V5C reference.
  • Then drive.

When a car changes hands the seller tells the DVLA, and the new keeper receives a new V5C log book in the post. Keep the new keeper slip safe until that arrives, because the reference on it is what you need.

Do I need insurance as well as tax?

Yes, and it needs to be in place first. A car must be insured before it is driven on a public road, including the drive home after buying it. Tax and insurance are separate things, bought in separate places, and both have to be sorted before the car moves. Ringing your insurer from the forecourt is completely normal — have the registration, make, model and mileage ready and it is a short call.

What about the MOT?

A car needs a valid MOT to be used on the road, and in England and Wales a car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration and then every year. Check the MOT expiry date before you agree anything. Anyone can check a vehicle's MOT history free on GOV.UK with its registration number: each test's result, the advisories and failures, and the mileage recorded. That tells you when the current certificate runs out as well as how the car has been looked after.

Why do two similar cars cost different amounts to tax?

Because the rules changed in 2017, and which set applies depends on when the car was first registered. Vehicle tax for a car first registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 is set by its CO2 emissions band; for a car registered from 1 April 2017 it is a standard yearly rate, with an extra charge for five years if its list price was over the threshold. So on an older car, a cleaner engine means a cheaper band, while on a newer one most cars sit on the same standard rate regardless of engine.

What this means in practice: when you are comparing two cars of a similar age and size, check the registration date and the CO2 figure, not just the engine size. A small, low-emission older car can sit in a very different band from a larger one of the same year. The 2010 Volkswagen Polo 1.2 S 60 at £2,995 is a fair example of the older, emissions-banded type.

Do I have to pay a whole year of tax at once?

No — GOV.UK lets you pay the tax for twelve months, for six months, or by Direct Debit spread across the year. That is a payment option on the DVLA's own service, not a credit agreement with anybody. The amounts themselves are on the GOV.UK vehicle tax rate tables rather than here, because they change. Setting up the Direct Debit when you first tax the car means it renews itself, which saves the one thing people most often forget.

What happens if I get this wrong?

An untaxed or uninsured car on a public road is an offence, and both are enforced automatically from cameras and the DVLA's own records — there is no need for anyone to stop you for it to be noticed. It is a bad way to start with a new car, and it is entirely avoidable with five minutes of admin before you drive.

Does ONECARS sort the tax for me?

We make sure nothing is in your way on the day, but the tax has to be in the new keeper's name, so it is yours to put on. What we do is have everything else ready: every ONECARS car page has the car's photographs, its full spec and its MOT history, and anything that needs doing is done by ONEFIX before the car is handed over. Every ONECARS car is checked on 34 points by ONEFIX, our own workshop on the same site at Plas Acton, Wrexham — the list is published at /how-we-check-our-cars. A car with work outstanding from its check is not handed over to its buyer until ONEFIX has put it right.

There is also no admin fee at ONECARS: the price shown is the price paid. And once the car is yours, ONEFIX next door services, repairs and MOTs it.

What if the car is being delivered to me?

Then it still needs to be taxed and insured in your name before it goes on the road. ONECARS delivers free within 20 miles of Plas Acton, Wrexham, on weekdays in hourly slots, with the car checked, valeted and fuelled before it leaves — see /delivery. A car bought from ONECARS online and delivered is a distance sale: the buyer has fourteen days from delivery to change their mind and return it. Our guide to whether you can return a used car to the dealer explains how that works.

Buying-day checklist

  • Insurance live in your name.
  • New keeper slip or V5C reference in your hand.
  • Tax bought online before you move the car.
  • MOT expiry date noted.
  • Direct Debit set up if you want it to renew itself.

Where should I look next?

If you have not viewed the car yet, what to check when you view a used car and questions to ask when buying a used car are the two to read first. Want a hand on the day? A reservation holds an ONECARS car for fourteen days; within those fourteen days it can be cancelled for any reason and the fee is refunded in full, and if you go ahead it comes off the price. We are at Plas Acton Garage, 282 Chester Road, Wrexham LL12 8DU, with a second forecourt at Ruyton near Shrewsbury, open Monday to Friday 9 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 4 for viewings by appointment — the office number is 01978 356983, or use /contact. Everything we have is at /used-cars.
