Does a used car come with a new MOT?

Published 21 October 2026 · reviewed 21 October 2026

In one paragraph

Not always. A car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration, then one every year, so the test due date follows the car, not the sale. Ask the seller how long is left, and check the car's MOT history free on GOV.UK before you buy.

Does a used car come with a new MOT?

Not automatically, so always ask how long is left on the one it has. An MOT belongs to the car, not to the sale: the test it passed last year still runs out on the same date whoever owns it. Some dealers put a fresh test on a car before it goes out, some hand it over with a few months left, and both are normal. The only way to know is to look at the expiry date and the test history before you agree to buy.

When does a car need its first MOT?

In England and Wales a car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of the day it was registered, and then every year after that. That matters most if you are looking at something nearly new. A two-year-old car may never have been tested at all, which is not a warning sign — there is simply no history yet to read. From the third birthday onwards there should be a test for every year the car has been on the road.

How do I find out when the MOT runs out?

Check the car's MOT history free on GOV.UK using its registration number. It lists every test the car has had: the result, the advisories, the failures, and the mileage recorded on the day. It also shows when the current test expires. It takes about a minute, it costs nothing, and you can do it from a car park while you are standing next to the car.

Every ONECARS car page old enough to have been tested shows that same DVSA history for you, test by test, with the mileage at each test, so you can read it before you drive over. The 2010 Volkswagen Polo at £2,995 is a good example of a car with years of tests to look through.

What should I look for in the MOT history?

Look at the pattern across the years rather than the last test on its own. Useful things to notice:

  • Mileage that climbs steadily. Jumps backwards or a year of almost no miles are worth a question.
  • The same advisory year after year. Something noted in 2022, 2023 and 2024 has probably never been dealt with.
  • Failures that got fixed quickly. A fail followed by a pass a day or two later is ordinary maintenance, not drama.
  • Gaps with no test at all. A car over three years old with a missing year was off the road, or untested, and it is fair to ask why.
  • Advisories about corrosion or suspension. These cost more to put right than a bulb or a wiper blade.

Does a valid MOT mean the car is in good condition?

No — an MOT is a safety and emissions test on the day it was taken, not a report on the whole car. It does not check the clutch, the gearbox, the air conditioning or the state of the service history. A car can pass its MOT in the morning and still need a cambelt. That is why a test certificate is a starting point and not the end of your checking.

What does ONECARS do before a car is sold?

Every ONECARS car is checked on 34 points by ONEFIX, our own workshop on the same site at Plas Acton in Wrexham, and the list is published at /how-we-check-our-cars. A car with work still outstanding from that check is not handed to its buyer until ONEFIX has put it right — that rule sits inside our system rather than in a sales promise. Every car page also carries the photographs, the full spec and the MOT history, so the things you would want to ask about are already in front of you.

Who does the MOT after I have bought it?

ONEFIX, the workshop next door, services, repairs and MOTs the cars we sell, so the people who checked the car are the people who see it next. You are free to take it anywhere, of course. It helps to put the expiry date in your phone the week you buy the car, because an MOT runs out quietly and nobody writes to remind you.

What else do I need sorted before I drive it home?

Insurance and tax. A car must be insured before it is driven on a public road, including the drive home. Vehicle tax does not transfer with a car either — as the new keeper you have to tax it before it goes on the road, which you can do straight away online with the reference from the V5C. We go through both in do you need to tax a used car before driving it home? and can you drive a car home without insurance?.

If you would rather read the tests before you visit, every car on our used cars pages has its history on it, and you can reserve a car for fourteen days while you think — cancel for any reason inside those fourteen days and the fee comes back in full. Our checking list is at what does a dealer check before selling a car?, and how to check a used car's MOT history walks through reading the GOV.UK record line by line. We are at Plas Acton Garage, 282 Chester Road, Wrexham LL12 8DU, open Monday to Friday 9 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 4 for viewings by appointment — get in touch if you want a car's history talked through before you come over.
