Is a used car deposit refundable? How reserving works

Published 17 October 2026 · reviewed 17 October 2026

In one paragraph

A reservation fee at ONECARS is refundable in full. It holds the car for fourteen days, and inside those fourteen days you can cancel for any reason and have the fee back. If you go ahead, it comes off the price of the car instead, and there is no admin fee added on top.

Is a deposit on a used car refundable?

At ONECARS, yes — a reservation fee is refundable in full for fourteen days, for any reason. That is a rule in our system rather than a favour granted on the day. Anywhere else, the answer depends entirely on the dealer's own written terms, which is why those terms are the thing to read before any money changes hands.

What does reserving a used car actually do?

A reservation takes the car off the market and holds it for you for fourteen days, so nobody else can buy it while your reservation runs. That matters more with used cars than with anything else you buy. Each one is a one-off: this mileage, this service history, this colour, at this price. There is no identical one in a warehouse behind it. If you have found the right car, a reservation buys you the time to sort insurance, book a viewing, arrange the drive over from Chester, Mold or Oswestry, or simply think it over for a night.

How do you get a reservation fee back?

Tell us inside the fourteen days and the fee comes back in full, and you do not need to give a reason. The office number is 01978 356983, or use /contact. Because the fourteen days are written into the reservation itself, there is nothing to argue about and nobody to persuade.

Is the fee an extra cost on top of the car?

No. If you go ahead, the reservation fee comes off the price of the car, so it is part of what you were paying anyway. ONECARS charges no admin fee either: the price shown on the car's page is the price paid. If a fee appears at the end of a deal somewhere that was never mentioned at the start, that is worth a question.

What is worth checking before you reserve?

Most of the checking can be done from your kitchen table, before you drive anywhere. Every ONECARS car page carries the car's photographs, its full spec and its MOT history, and on any car old enough to have been tested that history comes straight from the DVSA — test by test, with the mileage recorded each time. Anyone can look up the same MOT history free on GOV.UK using the registration number.

A short list to work through:

  • Read the MOT history and the mileage pattern across the tests.
  • Look at the spec and check the things you actually need are on the car.
  • Work out what it will cost you to insure before you commit.
  • Check what the road tax will be for that engine and registration year.
  • Read the reservation terms, and the return terms if it is being delivered.

Every ONECARS car is checked on 34 points by ONEFIX, our own workshop on the same site at Plas Acton — the full list is published at /how-we-check-our-cars. Where that check turns up work to be done, ONEFIX does it before the car is handed over; the car does not go out until it has. Our live cars are at /used-cars, and the 2010 Volkswagen Polo 1.2 S at £2,995 is a fair example of the sort of small, straightforward car people reserve while they get insurance quotes in.

Can you reserve a car you have not seen in person?

Yes, and buying one at a distance adds a second protection on top of the reservation. A car bought from us online and delivered is a distance sale, which gives you fourteen days from delivery to change your mind and return it. Delivery is free within 20 miles of Plas Acton, on weekdays in hourly slots, and the car is checked, valeted and fuelled before it leaves us. There is more at /delivery, and on whether buying this way is sensible at all at /read/guides/buying-a-used-car-online-with-delivery.

What happens on the day you collect the car?

Two things have to be in place before the car moves: insurance and tax. A car must be insured before it is driven on a public road, including the drive home. Vehicle tax does not transfer with the car, so the new keeper taxes it before driving it — that can be done online straight away with the V5C reference. We tell the DVLA the car has changed hands, and your new V5C log book arrives in the post. The detail is at /read/guides/do-you-need-to-tax-a-car-before-driving-it-home.

What happens after the sale?

The workshop that checked the car is the workshop that looks after it. ONEFIX is next door at the same site and services, repairs and MOTs the cars we sell. Every ONECARS car also comes with a free three-month warranty on the engine and gearbox, up to 2,500 miles, with any repair done by ONEFIX on site; longer paid cover is available. What it covers is set out at /guides/what-our-warranty-covers.

What should you ask any dealer before putting money down?

Four questions sort out most of it, and a straight dealer will answer all four without hesitating. Is the fee refundable, and for how long? Does it come off the price if I go ahead? Is there an admin fee or anything else added at the end? And is that in writing? If the answers are vague, the money can wait. We are at Plas Acton Garage, 282 Chester Road, Wrexham LL12 8DU, with a second forecourt at Ruyton near Shrewsbury — Monday to Friday 9 to 5, Saturday 10 to 4, viewings by appointment.
