Can you drive a car home without insurance?

Published 20 October 2026 · reviewed 20 October 2026

In one paragraph

No. A car must be insured before it is driven on a public road, and that includes the drive home from the forecourt. Sort the cover before you collect, not after. Vehicle tax does not transfer with the car either, so the new keeper must tax it before driving it.

Can you drive a car home without insurance after buying it?

No. A car must be insured before it is driven on a public road, and the drive home from a forecourt is a drive on a public road like any other. Paying for the car does not put cover on it. The cover has to be live before the wheels turn.

When should you arrange the cover — before or after you pay?

Before. Sort the insurance while you are still deciding, not on the day you are standing next to the car wanting to leave. Nothing about a handover is held up by paperwork you have already done, and everything is held up by paperwork you have not.

A good order of play looks like this:

  • Pick the car and read its page properly.
  • Get your cover quoted and in place for the day you intend to collect.
  • Tax the car before it is driven.
  • Collect, with the cover already live.

What details about the car do you need to get a quote?

The ones printed on the car's own page. Every ONECARS car page has the car's photographs, its full spec and its MOT history, so the make, model, derivative, year and registration are all in front of you before you ask anyone for a number. You can work through an insurer's questions from the page at the kitchen table, then come out to Plas Acton knowing where you stand.

If you want to read the MOT record yourself as well, anyone can check a vehicle's MOT history free on GOV.UK with its registration number — each test's result, the advisories and failures, and the mileage recorded at each test. We put the same DVSA record on the car page, test by test, so you are not taking anyone's word for it. There is more on reading it in how to check a used car's MOT history.

Does the car need to be taxed as well as insured?

Yes, and this is the one people miss. Vehicle tax does not transfer with a car: the new keeper must tax it before it is driven on a public road, and it can be done straight away online with the V5C reference. Insurance and tax are two separate jobs and both have to be done before the car moves. We have written that one up on its own in do you need to tax a used car before driving it home?.

Who tells the DVLA that you are the new keeper?

The seller does. When a car changes hands the seller tells the DVLA, and the new keeper receives a new V5C log book in the post. You do not have to chase it, and you do not need the new book in your hand before you can tax the car. For what else should come with the car, see what paperwork should come with a used car?.

What if the car is being delivered instead of collected?

Delivery takes the drive home out of your hands, but it does not take away the two jobs above: the car still needs to be insured and taxed before you drive it yourself. ONECARS delivers free within 20 miles of Plas Acton, Wrexham, on weekdays in hourly slots, and the car is checked, valeted and fuelled before it leaves us. The detail is on our delivery page.

A car bought from us online and delivered is a distance sale, which means you have fourteen days from delivery to change your mind and return it. That is a real safety net if you are buying from a distance and would rather not travel twice — see can I return a car I bought online?.

Can you hold a car while you sort the cover out?

Yes. A reservation holds the car for fourteen days. Within those fourteen days it can be cancelled for any reason and the fee is refunded in full, and if you go ahead it comes off the price. So if your insurer needs you to wait for a renewal date, nobody else is being shown the car in the meantime. How reserving works walks through it.

What else is already in place before you collect?

The workshop side. Every ONECARS car is checked on 34 points by ONEFIX, our own workshop on the same site at Plas Acton — the full list is published at how we check our cars. A car with work outstanding from its check is not handed over to its buyer until ONEFIX has put it right; that rule sits in our system rather than in a salesman's good intentions.

Every car also comes with a free three-month warranty on the engine and gearbox, up to 2,500 miles, with repairs done by ONEFIX on the same site, and longer paid cover is available — see what our warranty covers. There is no admin fee: the price shown is the price paid. A sensible small car to look at as an example is this 2010 Volkswagen Polo 1.2 S at £2,995.

Collection day checklist

  • Insurance live from the moment you intend to drive it.
  • Tax done — straight away online with the V5C reference.
  • You know when the next MOT is due. In England and Wales a car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration and then one every year.
  • Keys, service book and the car's paperwork handed over together.
  • You know who looks after it next: once a car is sold, ONEFIX — the workshop next door — services, repairs and MOTs it.
